Dear Friend:
The Spring City Lions Club has completed another rather successful year. This year we did some amazing
things and involed other community groups: Odd Fellows, Rotarians, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies.
This year we hope to reach out to other organizations including the American Legion and Tall Cedars; and
National Night Out™ is just one way to accomplish that.
Some of our accompishments last year were:
v
We collect eye glasses for recyling to be redistributed to the poor. The
collection container is in the Spring City Post Office or you can donate your old glasses to us any time you see a Lion.
v
Raising awareness of blindness with White Cane Day.
v
Participation in Canal Day's at Lock #61.
v
The Spring City Carnival at Brown Street Park
- we raised a lot of money for the club but unfortunately the vendors made out poorly.
v
With member donations we printed and distributed for free
the first ever Spring City Community Calendar. This year's calendar was supported by advertizing by a dozen local
organizations that believe in our work.
v
We sponsored the National Night Out™ which was a huge
success that brought out over a dozen civic, law enforcement and safety groups out to support one event - the likes of which have not been
seen in the borough in several years.
v
Thanks for the assistace from member Andrew Messer, we lauched
our independant member driven web site that in its first few months has had over 1,100 "hits". It gives us immediate access to
the community - announcing our events and sports access to our on-line store. We used the web to keep the
community informed of the Halloween Parade raindate change and the latest on the Christmas Tree Lighting activities.
v
We participated in the Revitalization Committee's Market
Music Fest.
v
We with the financial assistance of the Odd Fellow Club
organized the very successful Halloween Parade.
v
Continuing a tradition that may are not aware of - we
held a Halloween House Decorating Contest.
v
We took an active roll in planning and assiting
in the Borough Christmas Tree Lighting and even donated a new costume for Mrs. Claus.
v
We held our annual Christmas House Decorating Contest. This year we had
cash prizes.
Looking at that list - that's a lot of community centric activities for one small group of Lions.
I dare say it rivals that of any other organization and all supported by the funds we raise. In 2009 we plan an
agenda that is no less ambitious. Wouldn't you like to join us in those goals? This year we still need
to focus on increasing our membership. We need members from every walk of life - every corner of the borough and beyond.
Why not give us a visit at one of our dinner meetings at the
Spring City Hotel? We would love to have
you join us!
Yours in Lionism,
James J. Burns
